Frequently asked questions
Who Can Enter into a Civil Partnership?
Civil Partnerships are open to both same-sex and heterosexual couples who want an alternative to marriage.
What’s the Process to End a Civil Partnership?
To dissolve a Civil Partnership, you’ll need to:
- Submit a D8 application form to the court.
- Wait 20 weeks, then apply for a Conditional Order (stating there’s no reason to deny dissolution).
- Apply for a Final Order within 12 months to officially end the partnership.
What Do You Need to Show to Prove the Relationship Has Broken Down?
Under the DDSA 2020, no specific evidence is required. A statement confirming the relationship has irretrievably broken down is enough to apply for a no-fault dissolution.
